A member of our project team, Dr. Dragana Amedoski, has published a book Summary Register of the Kruševac Sancak from 1516 / 1516 Tarı̇hlı̇ Alacahı̇sār Sancāğı İcmāl Defterı̇: Transkrı̇psyon, Sırpçaya Tercüme ve Tıpkıbasım within the Sources for Serbian History edition of The Institute of History in Belgrade.

The book presents a critical edition of the oldest and most completely preserved Ottoman register of the Kruševac Sancak. The source is highly significant as it shows, among other things, how many members of the Serbian nobility in this region entered Ottoman service as spahis (cavalrymen) holding timars.

The member of our team, Marijana Mišević undertook a research trip to Istanbul from 13 to 15 December 2023. The main activities were aimed at completing the tasks defined in the framework of WP1 (compilation of an open access dataset and research on the various forms of influence of the Serbian nobility at the Ottoman court in the 15th century). This included regular visits to the Ottoman Archives of the Prime Minister’s Office; examination of the archival material, mainly from the 15th and early 16th centuries; selection and purchase of digital copies of relevant archival documents and records; several visits to the Süleymaniye Manuscript Library to take research notes on the material unavailable through online platforms; and, purchase of published critical editions and studies of relevant historical texts unavailable in Serbian libraries. In addition, advice and information were exchanged with Ottomanist colleagues from Bosphorus University, Istanbul Medeniyet University and Koç University.

Our team member Nedeljko Radosavljević conducted a research trip to Bulgaria from 22 November to 2 December 2023. His main objective was to examine archival material and acquire relevant literature for the study of the Serbian church elites under Ottoman rule in the 18th century, a topic developed within the framework of WP1 entitled “Serbian Nobility in the Ottoman Provinces and at the Sultan’s Court (15th-18th centuries)”. The research was carried out in Sofia, in the Bulgarian Historical Archive and in the Oriental Collections Department of the SS. Cyril and Methodius National Library and the Central State Archives of Bulgaria. Research was also carried out in the Kyustendil Regional Historical Museum and its departments. The collected sources and literature offer a particularly good insight into the research problems concerning the south-eastern part of Serbia and will allow a comparative analysis extending to the elites of other Slavic peoples under Ottoman rule.

The archaeological research carried out in Dvorine, in the foothills of Mt. Venčac, confirmed the exceptional importance of this site. In the cemetery, located around the remains of the large church, several marble tombstones were discovered. One of them bears an inscription stating that Bratisav (V) Bolić, a man in the service of Prince Lazar, was buried under it. Samples of human skeletal remains were taken for DNA analysis, which is being carried out as part of the NOBILITY project, financed by the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia.
