DEMOGRAPHIC CAPACITIES OF KARANOVAC/KRALJEVO IN 1834–1910

Summary

During most of the 19th and early 20th centuries, Karanovac/Kraljevo was the county seat with the status of varošica (a small town). In terms of the number of inhabitants, it was not among the large urban settlements in Serbia. Though not particularly numerous, the population of Karanovac/Kraljevo had the typical characteristics of an urban population that distinguished it from the rural population, i.e. there was a larger share of: the male population, working-age population, population born abroad, population living in small households and rented apartments, literate men and women, and a small share of the population engaged in agriculture. Certain demographic indicators of Kraljevo in the late 19th and early 20th century exceeded the average values of urban settlements in Serbia at that time.
