Abstract:

The Great Turkish War (1683–1699) between Austria and the Ottoman Empire is remembered in the Balkans for the intense dynamics of army movements, major twists in the undertakings of the warring parties and the violence to which Christians were exposed. The historiographical value of this great conflict is a series of narratives of European and Ottoman provenance, as well as the contemporary and later studies based on them. Such corpus enables reliable reconstructions of the military operations of both sides and a detailed description of events at the local level. That is the case with the battle for Niš (1689), the city strategically crucial for the Austrian expansion into the deeper hinterland of the Ottoman Balkans (Rumelia). Though important, in Serbian historiography the reconstruction of this battle was done only once and with a limited number of sources (Radmila Tričković’s chapter Niš u velikom ratu in Istorija Niša I, Niš 1983). Although valuable as the first research into this topic, her work led to oversimplified and, to some point, vague interpretation of some parts of this event. Therefore, to better present the dynamic of the battlefield in Niš and facilitate its visualisation, in our research we included and supplemented the information not considered in Tričković’s work. We thereby constructively contributed to future research into this topic.

Aпстракт:

Велики бечки рат (1683–1699) између Аустрије и Османског царства упамћен је по високој динамици кретања војски, великим обртима у подухватима зараћених страна и насиљу којем су хришћани били изложени. Историографску вредност овог великог сукоба чини корпус наратива европске и османске провени­јенције, као и савремених и каснијих студија заснованих на њима. Такав корпус омогућава поуздане реконструкције војних операција обе стране и детаљан опис догађаја на локалном нивоу. То је случај са битком за Ниш (1689), града који је био стратешки кључан за ширење Аустрије у дубље залеђе османског Балкана (Румелију). Иако значајна, у српској историографији реконструкција ове битке урађена је само једном и то са ограниченим бројем извора (поглавље „Ниш у великом ратуˮ Радмиле Тричковић у „Историји Нишаˮ I, Ниш 1983). Иако значајан као прво бављење овом темом, рад представља упрошћено и донекле нејасно тумачење појединих делова овог догађаја. Да бисмо што боље представили динамику нишког ратишта и његову лакшу визуелизацију, у ово истраживање смо укључили и допунили га подацима из наслова који нису разматрани у раду Радмиле Тричковић. На тај начин конструктивно смо допринели будућим истраживањима ове теме.
