Апстраткт:
Циљ рада је да осветли амерички добротворни рад током Првог светског рата на основу извештаја Американки, медицинских сестара које су радиле у Србији. Иако се делатност америчких хуманитараца у Србији за време Првог светског рата налазила у фокусу српске, и донекле америчке историографије, рад америчких медицинских сестара може бити предмет посебног истраживања. Значај хуманитарних активности Америчког Црвеног крста у Србији током Првог светског рата је већ познат. Амерички лекари и медицинске сестре имали су истакнуто место током евакуације и поновног заузимања Београда 1915. године. Извештаји, писма и дневници америчких медицинских сестара представљају јединствену грађу за истраживаче. Са застрашујућом реалношћу су представљале искуства ратне хирургије и неге болесника у ратним, скоро немогућим условима. Описи свакодневног живота, односа према рату, личне мотивације и очекивања средине, сведоче о активној улози медицинских сестара у ратним збивањима. Кроз њихове личне забелешке бледи стереотип медицинске сестре као пасивног сведока. Изронила је нова слика жене која је сопственом одлуком постала посредник, па и учесник догађаја на фронту, као и одговорни чинилац у раду са цивилним становништвом.

Abstract:
The paper aims to shed light on the American humanitarian work during WWI based on the reports of American women, medical nurses who worked in Serbia. Although the activity of American humanitarians in Serbia during WWI was in the focus of Serbian and, to an extent, American historiography, the work of American nurses can be a topic for separate research. The importance of humanitarian activities of the American Red Cross in Serbia in WWI is already known. American doctors and nurses played a prominent role in the evacuation and re-capture of Belgrade in 1915. The reports, letters and diaries of American nurses were a unique source for researchers. They presented in a terrifyingly realistic way the experiences of war surgery and care for the sick in the almost unbearable war conditions. The descriptions of everyday life, attitude towards the war, personal motivation and expectations of the environment testify to the active role of medical nurses in the war. The stereotype of a nurse as a passive witness pales when their personal notes are read. A new picture of the woman emerges – the woman who, by her own decision, became an intermediary and participant in events on the front, and a responsible factor in the work with the civilian population.
